The end of 2011, and on to 2012!

We have had a wonderful 2011, and met phenomenal people in our travels and work as professional speakers.

It has always been "fun" but now actually seems to be becoming MORE enjoyable!

And...Tom will be working with the University of Phoenix starting the beginning of 2012, as well as joining the St. Louis University School of Nursing as an Adjunct Associate Professor teaching psychopharmacology to the nurse practitioner students in May of 2012.

We're already booked through June of 2012, and are right now negotiating a contract or two in October of 2012.

NEW SEMINARS WITH CMI AND MEDS-PDN- maybe with the ARMY and the Louisiana Counseling Association?

We have been in touch with the folks at PESI, now a division of CMI, for some time to see if we could provide professional speaking services. We actually began our discussions with CMI- before all the mergers- in December of 2008.
We have been picked up (well, Tom, at least) for 13 gigs between now and the end of the year.
We continue to negotiate with HEALTH-EDucation Network, LLC about our current offering, and we have just today submitted another one to them on the topic of pain and addiction.
Additionally, we continue to chat with the ARMY Substance Abuse program and the Lousiana Counseling Association for possible presentations, too.

Wow! New gigs aplenty!

Well, goodness! Look what has happened in the last two weeks!
Turns out that the PESI, CMI, and MEDS-PDN group has hired Tom to give several new seminars, dealing with psychopharmacology for mental health professionals AND pharmacology for rehabilitation professionals.
The psychopharmacology seminars are scheduled in late October (Manchester, New Hampshire and Portland, Maine), as well as in Rosewell and Bloomington, Minnesota in the middle of November.
He will be speaking to rehabilitation professionals in the first week of November in Scranton, Cherry Hill, and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

We have now two new gigs- one in May and another in April.
The Tarrant County Challenge, Inc., in Fort Worth has hired us to do a presentation May 17, and the Institute for Strengthening Families has hired Tom to do two presentations in Indianapolis on April 12!

HEALTH-EDucation Network, LLC and we have been floating some new CE programs. One of these, the Autism Spectrum Disorders Update, has been cricitally received but had a marketing issue-
We had a pretty good turnout in Oak Brook, but only 5 people were scheduled for Chicago Downtown, so the second presentation of this new seminar had to be cancelled.
However, it still does have some dates when it will be presented. The official title of this presentation is:
Autistic Spectrum Disorder for Mental Health and Education Professionals- Legal Issues, Psychopharmacological and Integrative Therapies

We are keeping our other dates, but some of the dates will now showcase the new presentation we've developed dealing with psychopharmacology in the elderly. The title of this new topic is:
PHARMACOLOGY OVERVIEW: Challenges & Complexities of Treating the Baby Boomer Generation…and Their Parents. Pharmacotherapy, Psychopharmacological and Psychotherapy Issues

Cross Country Education, Inc. has picked Tom up for 6 seminars (trial runs) of his new presentation:
Integrative Therapies for the Intervention of Migraines

WELL, IT'S A MIXED BAG!
We were informed that some of the venues will be cancelled (only two of them) and four will be "on hold" with our current topics offered through HEALTH EDucation Network, LLC.
But...Cross Country Education has already developed the brochures for the new Migraine seminar.
And, we expect two associations (one a State Association; one, an organization located in Tarrant County, Texas) to be picking us up for "in-house" gigs.

New seminar locations, new seminars!

We are getting ready to roll out the new seminar on Autism that will be incorporate the law, educational issues, psychopharmacology, and integrative therapies. It is coming to the greater Chicago area, South Bend, Indianapolis, and Terre Haute in February.
Many other sites have already been designated for this seminar.

Later this year, we will be focusing on pharmacology and legal issues for the elderly. Watch for more information soon!
Additionally, Tom has been tapped to present a seminar on Migraines. This will also be in the Chicago area in March, with three more venues in April.

On the Way to the Midwest Symposium on Autism and Asperger's

We have just received notification of the new seminar being accepted by HEALTH-EDucation Network, LLC.
The title will be:

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Pharmacology, Integrative Therapies, Special Ed/Disability Law, IDEA and the DSM.

This seminar will encompass not only the psychopharmacology, but the pharmacology of ASD as well as an intense review of the issues surrounding DSM diagnosis and/or versus IDEA eligibility criteria.

Pretty cool, indeed!

We have just returned from Albany, NY and Cromwell, CT. Nice people. Next week we will be in Irving (Dallas) Texas with the Texas Association of School Psychologists with a whizzbang seminar on "keeping your practice safe."

This will deal with ethics issues for school psychologists, and include information on the US Supreme Court ruling in June of 2009 in the Forest Grove case.
This case has the potential to change special education laws and regulations- and how school systems respond to the implementation of those regulations.

Additionally, this ruling may actually bring "private" therapists, like non-school psychologists, social workers, and counselors into a direct relationship with the schools. As example, school folks use the criteria found in IDEA to determine eligibility for special education services, while Forest Grove incorporates DSM-IV.

Just an update- today we will be sending the information to HEALTH EDucation Network, LLC regarding our presentations at the November Autism Symposium. Barbara is giving a presentation on the Laws pertaining to disabiliy and how those Laws affect mental health professionals and school professionals.
Tom is doing two- one on complimentary and alternative therapies for the treatment of autism and another on the current use of psychopharmscological agents.

Smith Law (that's Barbara) and Smith Rehabilitation Consultants, Inc. (that's Tom) at are already booking seminars for 2011 with nationally known providers of Continuing Education for mental health professionals, such as HEALTH-EDucation Network, LLC.

We have other programs "in the works" and are already negotiating with several State and National Associations, as well as colleges and universities, for speaking engagements.

These new seminars will include a more comprehensive presentation of mental health drugs and the legal issues surrounding patients using those medications, but now will include a possible focus on speech therapists, occupational therapists, developmental therapists, and physical therapists.

Another one under development will focus solely on the treatment of depression. Many of our attendees have stated that they feel "overwhelmed" when all the mental health conditions are addressed in light of psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. This should be a "return to the basics" but will include several treatments that are "new."

Last, many have asked that Tom write a book on psychopharmacology. Well, Cross Country Education now has an extensive library of hour-long topics (antidepressants, ADHD drugs, antianxiety medications, etc.) More are coming. BUT...Tom has contacted several publishers about a book. Submission to one publisher should occur this month. We'll let you know!

Cancellation of Washington State Teleconference

Dear friends and associates:
We had to cancel the Washington State School Psychologists telelconference dealing with bipolar disorder, autism, and the Forest Grove US Supreme Court ruling yesterday.

Barbara's father, John Adrian ("Abe") Herzog (81) died late Wednesday after suffering head trauma when he fell down the stairs in his house Tuesday afternoon.

The entire production team involved has been incredibly supportive. Thanks to Deb, Steve, Gary, April, and all the school psychologists who had to change their schedules at the last minute.

Ww just finished a rather interesting tour with our "Current Trends in Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals" seminars of New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Arizona (Scottsdale and Tucson.)
What a nice bunch of professionals!
We are going out next week (April 18-24) to Columbia, Maryland; Fort Washington, Pennsylvania; and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
We have also been contacted about doing some "emergency fill-in" work by several agencies.
